The quote from Forrest Gump that compares life to a box of chocolates is quaint and sweet (sweet – chocolates – get it?), but it’s not as practical for everyday living as Mrs. Gump’s definition of stupid: “Stupid is as stupid does,” a phrase that is especially useful when referring to someone else. In effect, Forrest’s mom was telling him that, like it or not, a person may be evaluated by his or her actions. Likewise, writers who make “stupid” grammar mistakes in formal writing, blogs, or social media posts may weaken their message, detract from their credibility, and make themselves look just plain silly. This don’t-make-yourself-look-silly warning can be found in many places on the web, but this one has illustrations!
